We are all familiar with the saying ‘you are what you eat’ and in a sexual context this saying could not be more true as it is the consumption of beneficial nutrients that literally drive the sex machine in our bodies.
Whilst many vitamins and minerals including zinc and iron, have a beneficial effect on sexual performance, it is the amino acid, L-Arginine that is thought to be vitally important. In fact, it is L-Arginine that is responsible for producing nitric oxide, which works to open penile vessels, facilitating blood to flow throughout and promote erectile function. Therefore, without nitric oxide the body is unable to stimulate this sexual function.
It is the circulation and flow of blood that determine the frequency, size and strength of sexual performance. In addition, L-Arginine has been found to stimulate the pituitary and thymus glands, of which secretions play a key role in regulating sperm production, therefore boosting fertility.
Whilst the body has the ability to produce some L-Arginine, the amounts produced differ from person to person, with many people unable to produce sufficient amounts.
